Frankincense is more than a fragrance used in reference to myrrh during Christian holidays. It’s been used for many years in a variety of ways from incense burners to cosmetics. It’s been found in some of the remains of ancient civilizations including Anglo-Saxon and Egyptian. Frankincense oil can provide numerous health benefits. It can help reduce stress, boost immunity, fight cancer, improve skin health and promote memory function.

Ways to Use Frankincense Essential Oil

Frankincense has an aroma that is quite alluring, but it offers so much more than that. It’s often used in aromatherapy and holistic medicinal practices. The essential oil has some very powerful properties that offer a variety of health benefits. Some of the most popular ways to use this oil include:

  • Relieve Stress.Frankincense essential oil is known to induce feelings of peace and relaxation. To use it to relieve stress try adding a few drops in your next warm bath. Use it to fight anxiety by adding it to an oil diffuser. It can help reduce feelings of anxiety by promoting a sense of peace.
  • Natural Cleanser. Frankincense EO has antiseptic properties which means it eliminates bacteria and viruses. This makes it perfect for cleaning indoor areas. You have probably heard of the plat being used as a deodorizer. Put a few drops of it in a diffuser to help deodorize and disinfect rooms and surfaces around your home while reducing indoor pollution.
  • Fight Aging and Wrinkles. The astringent properties of Frankincense oil help it protect skin cells. It’s often used to reduce acne, large pores, prevent wrinkles and can naturally tighten and lift the skin so it doesn’t show signs of aging. Use the oil on any area where the skin is sagging like the jowls, abdomen, or under the eyes. Six drops of the essential oil can be added to an ounce of a carrier oil like coconut, olive, or sesame oil. Once it is mixed with a carrier oil, it can be applied directly to the skin.
  • Fight off Colds and Flu. If you have a cold or the flu, you can use Frankincense oil for some respiratory relief. It has anti-inflammatory properties that can help make breathing easier for those suffering from allergies or asthma. It can also help eliminate phlegm in the lungs or nasal passages. Add just a few drops on a cloth, then hold it up near the nose to inhale in all these respiratory benefits. You may also want to add the oil to a diffuser or diffuser jewelry.
  • Joint Pain and Inflammation. Frankincense has the ability to help relieve inflammation such as is common to arthritis. Dilute it with a carrier oil and then rub it directly into the painful area. It can be used for any joints as well as your feet, neck, or back. You can also reap the benefits by diffusing it into your home. Add a drop or two to steaming hot water before soaking a towel in it. Place the wet towel over your face so you can inhale the oil to help reduce muscle aches and pains.

Recipes Using Frankincense EO

Body Butter to Reduce Scars


  • 2 ounces of coconut oil or shea butter
  • 10 drops of jasmine EO
  • 10 drops of frankincense EO

Melt the shea butter or coconut oil until it becomes liquid. It should not become so hot it could burn you. Add the essential oils and stir to combine them. You can use it right away on a scar, but if you’d like to create a cream that is shelf-stable, put the mixture in the refrigerator for a few minutes until it is cool. Then using a hand mixer set on high speed, whip it into a cream. Store it in glass containers at room temperature.

Relaxing Facial Cream

Use this as a natural night cream that also helps you fall asleep. Apply it to your face to help clear up breakouts or blemishes. You can also use it as a way to boost skin health.


  • 5 drops of frankincense EO
  • 5 drops of lavender EO
  • ¼ tablespoon of coconut oil
  • ½ teaspoon of olive oil

Make sure the coconut oil is soft. Heat it first if you need to. Then add the other oils and stir it all up. Use it to spread on your face or body. Store your night cream in a glass container.

Headache Reliever

If you suffer from a headache, try making this blend and applying it topically to the temples and neck.


  • 10 drops of frankincense EO
  • 10 drops of lavender EO
  • 10 drops of peppermint EO
  • Top off the 10 ml roller bottle with the carrier oil of your choice.

Anti-Stress Frankincense Blend

Add these ingredients to a 10 ml glass bottle or roller bottle:

  • 4 drops of frankincense EO
  • 4 drops of marjoram EO
  • 6 drops of geranium EO
  • 6 drops of clary sage EO
  • 4 drops of sweet orange EO

Top the roller bottle off with the carrier oil of your choice and use topically to reduce stress.

Adult’s Sleepy-Time Blend


  • 4 drops of marjoram EO
  • 10 drops of frankincense EO
  • 10 drops of bergamot EO
  • 12 drops of vetiver EO
  • 15 drops of lavender EO
  • 12 drops of Roman chamomile EO
  • 10 drops of cedarwood EO

Mix the essential oils together and top off the 10 ml glass bottle with the carrier oil of your choice if you want to use it topically. You may also leave the carrier oil out and put 5 to 6 drops of the oil blend in your diffuser before bedtime.
