Sweet birch essential oil is created through the process of steam distillation. The oil comes from the woody parts of the tree. It’s rarer and more difficult to produce than many of the other essential oils. You might have a hard time finding a supplier because of sustainability issues. Sometimes it is diluted or available in only limited quantities.

Although birch EO comes from a tree, it lacks the same woodsy aroma that other tree oils exhibit. It smells mintier. Many think it is similar to the scent of wintergreen. It also shares some of the same benefits as wintergreen EO. This is likely due to the fact that they both contain methyl salicylate which is a natural compound that soothes achy joints and muscles.

Health Benefits of Sweet Birch Essential Oil

There are a lot of possible health benefits from using sweet birch essential oil. This is due to its wide variety of properties including disinfectant, antidepressant, analgesic, germicide, astringent, and antiseptic characteristics. The health benefits and uses of birch EO include:

Relieving Joint and Muscle Pain

This essential oil, in particular, has a long history of providing relief from painful joints and muscles. It is often used in creams and lotions to help relieve arthritis. It is beneficial for improving circulation which can help alleviate swelling as well as other symptoms of arthritis and rheumatism. Remember to dilute it with a carrier oil before applying it topically. Three to six drops of birch EO mixed with 30 ml of the carrier oil of your choice makes a good blend to rub on aching joints and muscles. If you are dealing with light pain, you can reduce the amount of oil to two to three drops.  Massage it into the aching area until it is warm. This helps open up skin pores. You can also put about four drops in bath water to help relieve pain associated with rheumatism.

The anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties of sweet birch essential oil make it a great natural option for treating congestion and respiratory tract problems. When inhaled, it can help relieve congestion in the airways as well as through the nasal passages while helping prevent mucus build-up. There are several ways to use birch EO for relief.

Gently massage this blend into your chest to help you breathe easier.

Promote Healthy Hair

Not everyone knows that birch essential oil is good for helping grow healthy hair. The oil strengthens your hair and makes it longer, stronger and fuller. It also helps prevent your hair from becoming too brittle. Birch EO also helps prevent dandruff from forming on the scalp. To use birch oil as a remedy for your hair, add just a drop of the EO to your regular shampoo. Wash your hair as normal. Remember that combining oils together to make specialized blends can provide even more benefits. When it comes to treating your hair, birch EO blends well with other essential oils like ylang-ylang, lemon, rosemary, and lavender EO.
