Are you angry? Tired? Stressed out? Do you lack energy? Suffer from anxiety or depression? You might not want to consider using essential oils then. Unless, of course, you are ready for serious relief! Aromatherapy has been the subject of many studies showing their effectiveness. So, unless you want some real relief, maybe you should avoid them.

 Don’t Use Essential Oils Unless….

You want to ease depression.

Clary sage is often very effective for uplifting moods. Frankincense is used frequently to treat both anxiety and depression since it provides spiritual grounding as well as tranquil energy. Chamomile is able to reduce irritability, worry, and over-thinking. Jasmine can be an antidepressant and help produce feelings of optimism and confidence. Ylang ylang can be beneficial for helping increase optimism and cheerfulness. It can also help soothe fears.

You want to get a better night’s sleep.

Several EOs can help induce sleep including chamomile, lavender, frankincense, bergamot and clary sage. Each person is different, and it can take a bit of trial and error to find what works best for you. Oils are also very different so one that sends one person right to sleep may not have an effect on someone else. The above-mentioned oils are the most frequently used, but there are others that are worth trying as well. If those don’t seem to work for you, or if you just want to find oils that are a perfect fit for your need, try marjoram, sandalwood or bergamot.

You want to relieve anxiety.

The aromas of several essential oils have been known to help ease anxiety. Oils have compounds that can soothe both mind and body. EOs commonly used to alleviate stress and anxiety include lemon, peppermint, bergamot, ylang-ylang, and lavender. Properties in these and other oils can pass through the body’s barriers and directly affect the areas of the brain that control feelings of anxiety, stress, depression, and panic.

You want to relieve aches and pains.

Aromatherapy can help provide pain relief no matter where the pain is in the body. Lavender, rosemary, juniper, peppermint or clary sage can be used to alleviate aches and pains. For headaches, in particular, aromatherapy can provide a holistic, homeopathic remedy. Oils commonly used to alleviate headaches include peppermint, rosemary, sandalwood, and eucalyptus.

You want to boost your immune system.

Even those in the medical profession can agree that it’s much better to prevent illness than it is to treat it. It’s much better all the way around to take steps to prevent an illness or disease instead of waiting until medication is needed. Many oils can be beneficial when diffused due to their antimicrobial properties. Beneficial oils include lemon, peppermint, frankincense, oregano, and eucalyptus. Tee tree oil is often used as a topical antiseptic to treat a variety of skin conditions or relieve irritation due to insect bites. Eucalyptus essential oil has antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial properties that can help prevent illnesses. Due to its antimicrobial properties, clary sage was determined to be an effective way to fight Staphylococcus aureus.

You want to boost your energy levels

Most of us run in high gear most of the time. Translated that means most people could benefit from an energy boost. Stimulants like energy drinks, cigarettes or coffee can cause damage to the body. There are several oils that can be diffused to help increase energy levels. Added to a well-balanced eating and exercise plan, EOs like black pepper, tea tree, rosemary, clove, and jasmine can help boost energy levels as well as increase circulation. Oils can provide this benefit without the dangers of negative side effects like artificial stimulants have.

You want to improve your memory capability.

It’s not just the elderly who worry about memory loss, although they are typically very concerned about it. It’s scary to realize you are struggling with short-term memory issues or having difficulty recalling events from your past. Aromatherapy using essential oils may be a useful treatment that can help individuals recall older memories and form new ones. Sage essential oil is one of the most commonly used oil for helping memory function.

You want to improve your body’s digestion.

Sometimes just adding spices to foods can stimulate the appetite and kick-start the digestive system. Certain odors can stimulate the digestive process and cause the release of digestive fluids in the stomach, small intestine, and mouth. Aromatherapy treatment with EOs can also help with the digestive process. Citrus oils are beneficial for resolving some common problems. The oils most widely used for helping with digestive issues include chamomile, ginger, lavender, fennel and clary sage.

Essential oils are used for a wide variety of purposes and can be used in different ways. They are commonly used to make chemical-free cleaning products, beauty products, personal care items, diffused, or applied topically.
