When you get an injury that doesn’t break the skin but breaks blood vessels just under the surface of the skin, a bruise forms. Damaged blood vessels leak blood and it becomes trapped underneath the skin. As soon as you discover it, you may wonder what is the best essential oil for bruises. You want to encourage healing, reduce any swelling and pain. When the injury is mild, it might take awhile for the bruise to appear, while severe injuries may produce a bruise in a matter of minutes. Sometimes they appear in areas with thinner skin like on the facial area. Essential oils provide a natural remedy to help reduce inflammation and the bruise itself. As long as the skin did not get broken when you were injured, essential oils can help when they are applied topically.

Which is the best essential oil for bruises?

Cultures around the world have used essential oils for promoting healing for hundreds of years. More recently, research has been able to uncover some of the healing benefits of EOs which makes it easier to identify the ones that are best to use for helping bruises heal. Here are some of the best EOs and how to use them.

Some of the oils best to use for healing a bruise include lemongrass, cypress, frankincense, lavender, rosemary, geranium, and helichrysum.

Lemongrass Essential Oil

Lemongrass EO is useful for helping reduce pain and swelling in the area. Sometimes, bruises are painful, especially if they were caused by a direct blow or injury. To use lemongrass oil, blend five to six drops of the oil with one tablespoon of carrier oil and gently massage it into the area that was injured. Repeat this application two or three times a day until the bruise is gone.

Cypress Essential Oil

Cypress EO is useful for effectively blocking the blood from pooling or collecting. It stimulates blood flow and can give the healing process a jumpstart. When it is applied soon after the injury occurs, it can help keep the worst bruise from becoming too dark. To get the best benefit, immediately after an injury you think may end with discoloration, mix three to five drops of cypress EO in a carrier oil and apply it to the area of the wound. This can help reduce the discoloration commonly associated with bruising.

Frankincense Essential Oil

Frankincense is often listed as the best essential oil for bruises because it has antioxidant properties and stimulant compounds which can help reduce the discolorations. This EO can be applied right after the injury occurs or after the recovery process has begun.  Frankincense oil is one of the oils that does not have to be diluted before being applied to the skin. Just rub a few drops into the skin since it is not toxic. You can even use it on children without causing harm.

Lavender Essential Oil

 This essential oil is well known for being able to prevent bruises from forming in the first place. It can also be useful for minimizing the discoloration. It also has anti-inflammatory and astringent properties that keep blood from pooling in the injured area. It may be possible to apply lavender oil right after the injury and avoid bruising altogether. It is highly effective when applied immediately after the injury happens. Place three to five drops of the undiluted oil directly on the area where you believe the damage occurred to prevent bad bruising and relieve pain.

Rosemary Essential Oil

Rosemary EO contains powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds which can help manage the body’s immune response to bruising and reduce inflammation. It can often help speed up recovery. Add a few drops of rosemary essential oil to the carrier oil of your choice and apply to the site of the injury. This oil can also be placed in a warm tub of water. Make sure to submerge the area that has been bruised in the water for the best effect.

Geranium Essential Oil

To stimulate the production of new, healthy tissue, use Geranium essential oil. It aids the healing process by increasing circulation around the bruised site. It can cause a small increase in inflammation at first, but then the healing process occurs much faster. Geranium EO can be blended with any of the carrier oils and applied to the affected area of the skin. Make sure to dilute this oil to prevent skin irritation from occurring.

Helichrysum Essential Oil

After a blow to the body, inflammation causes blood to rush to the wound site initially. This is when the bruise appears. After six to ten hours use helichrysum EOto stimulate the blood vessels to start the healing process. This oil is known for stimulating and increasing circulation to aid the process. This oil doesn’t require dilution, just apply three to five drops directly on the bruised region about six to 12 hours after the injury occurs.

 

Four Steps for Helping Bruises Heal

In addition to using the best essential oils for bruises, there are a few natural ways to help with the healing process.

  1. Apply Ice. Icing as soon as the injury occurs will help aid in quick healing. It slows down the blood flow and can prevent some inflammation. Place an ice pack on the area for about 10 minutes. Do this several times a day to help reduce swelling.
  2. Rest! Staying off your feet can help slow down circulation. You may do some gentle massaging, but don’t pursue deep tissue massage as it can worsen the injury.
  3. Elevate! Try to keep the bruised area propped up as much as possible. This keeps blood from pooling in the area and can help the bruise stay smaller and heal more quickly.
  4. Take an OTC for pain relief. Ibuprofen or Tylenol can help reduce pain as well as swelling.
