Getting a good night’s sleep is an essential part of living a healthy lifestyle. There are several strategies that can be beneficial for helping you get to sleep and stay asleep like turning off all technology an hour before bedtime or reducing your caffeine intake. But sometimes the brain just won’t shut off when it’s time to go to bed, especially after a busy, stressful day. There are a variety of essential oils that have a relaxing effect or can help relieve anxiety. Due to their calming effects, they can also help you fall asleep or stay asleep at night. Most of these you’ll see mentioned in the best essential oil blends for sleep because they work alone to help with sleeping. Adding them to a blend just enhances the effect or can just be a matter of preference. You may want to try some of these single oils before using them in a blend.

  • Lavender EO:Lavender is almost always at the top of the list of essential oils that help with relaxation or sleep. There are numerous studies that have confirmed its ability to improve sleep for most people.
  • Vetiver EO: Distilled from the roots of the plant, vetiver essential oil has a rich and earthy scent. It helps with grounding and assists with quieting the mind so you can go to sleep. It is not a super light oil so sometimes it takes a little bit to get used to it. However, it is not quite as strong and is effective when blended with other oils like Roman chamomile and lavender.

How to Make the Best Essential Oil Blend for Sleep

Since everyone may respond differently to oils, it may take a little trial and error to find which one, or which blend works best for you. Some people like to have two or three different oils to use as a sleep aid or make their own blends by mixing and matching the oils they find most effective.   • Blend #1: 2 drops of lavender essential oil, 2 drops of vetiver essential oil, 2 drops of marjoram essential oil.
  • Blend #2: 3 drops of chamomile essential oil, 2 drops of bergamot essential oil, 2 drops of frankincense essential oil.
  • Blend #3: 2 drops of lavender essential oil, 2 drops of chamomile essential oil, 2 drops of marjoram essential oil.
  • Blend #4: 3 drops of vetiver essential oil, 3 drops of lavender essential oil, 2 drops of frankincense essential oil
  • Blend #5: 3 drops of lavender essential oil, 3 drops of vetiver essential oil

Ways to Use Essential Oil Blends for Sleep

The most popular way to use an essential oil blend for sleep is to diffuse it. However, that does not mean it’s the only way to use them. Here are a few ideas to help you use EOs to help you sleep.

  1. Diffuse EOs. By far the most popular way to use essential oils is to diffuse them into the room. Add water to the fill mark and add the correct number of drops. Please follow the manufacturer’s directions for your make or model.
  2. Apply Topically.EOs can be mixed with a carrier oil and applied topically. Once they are diluted with a carrier oil like avocado oil, coconut oil, or other oil, they can be applied to the wrists, behind the ears or to pressure points.
  3. Make an EO mist. Combine essential oils and water in a glass spray bottle or an atomizer and spray the mist around your room or lightly to the bed linens. You can spray it to the underside of the pillow, so it won’t come in contact with your skin but will have the same effect. You’ll want to use about 4 to 5 drops of essential oil(s) with ½ cup of water. If that’s too strong, dilute it a bit more with water next time.
